A home feels calm when its rooms speak to each other. That does not mean painting every wall the same shade. It means choosing a small family of colours and letting them move from room to room in different amounts, so the eye travels smoothly from the hallway to the kitchen to the living room.
Start with what is staying
Before you look at paint chips, look at what you already own and love. Flooring, a favourite rug, kitchen cabinets, a stone fireplace or a large sofa all carry colour, and they are far harder to change than a wall. Pull your palette from these anchor pieces so new colours feel like they belong.
Choose a base, a supporting colour and an accent
Most cohesive homes rely on three layers. A soft base colour covers most walls and ceilings and keeps everything connected. A supporting colour, usually a little deeper, appears on feature walls, cabinetry or doors. An accent colour shows up in small doses through cushions, art, vases and throws.
- Base: warm whites, greige, soft sand or pale stone
- Supporting: sage, clay, dusty blue or mushroom
- Accent: terracotta, mustard, ink blue or deep green
Let the light decide the shade
North facing rooms get cooler, bluer light, so warm undertones keep them cosy. South facing rooms are flooded with warm light and can handle cooler, crisper shades. Always paint large sample patches and look at them in the morning, afternoon and evening before you commit.
Use transitions on purpose
Doorways, hallways and stairwells are natural places to switch colours. Keep trim and ceilings consistent throughout the house, and the changes between rooms will look deliberate rather than random.
A good palette is less about the perfect shade and more about how the shades relate to each other.
Repeat colours in small ways
Carry your accent colour into at least a few rooms, even if it is just a picture frame or a plant pot. These small repeats are what make a home feel designed as one space instead of a series of separate rooms.
